On May 7th, 2025, the Shyogwe Diocese held a commemoration event marking the 31st anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The ceremony took place in Shyogwe Sector and began with a prayer led by Rev. Sanno Stephen, followed by a message from the Word of God based on Exodus 20: The Commandments of God, delivered by Bishop Jean Paul Rukundo Methode.

The event was attended by various distinguished guests, including:

  • Hon. Deputy KARINIJABO Barthelemie
  • Hon. Deputy UWIZEYE Thérèse
  • The Bishop of Karongi Diocese and his spouse
  • The representative of the Archbishop, Rev. Sanno Stephen
  • The Mayor of Muhanga District
  • Security officials (Army and Police)
  • The representative of IBUKA at district level
  • The Executive Secretary of Shyogwe Sector
  • Staff members of EAR Shyogwe
  • Archdeacons and Pastors
  • Anglican schools from Shyogwe Sector

A keynote address was delivered by Canon KAYITABA Michel, who reflected on Rwanda’s history and the role of the Church before, during, and after the Genocide. A testimony was shared by genocide survivor Murebwayire Antoinette, who recounted her painful journey but also expressed gratitude for life and hope.

The guest of honor highlighted the tragic role some religious leaders played during the genocide but commended the current efforts to promote unity and resilience among Rwandans.

Bishop Louis Pasteur Kabayiza thanked God for ending the genocide through The former Rwandan Patriotic Army (RPA), Inkotanyi forces and expressed appreciation to the government for creating space to remember. He especially commended Rev. MUTIMURA Berchimas for his acts of love during the genocide

The event concluded with an act of support to a genocide survivor, Rubamburamanzi Isaïe, from Shyogwe Sector.
